Caramel is a wonderful…wonderful thing!! I love just about anything that has it as a featured ingredient!!

I always thought that in order to make caramel at home, I would need a candy thermometer. It turns out that a candy thermometer isn’t needed, plus it is really simple!! Just 4 easy ingredients, and about 10 minutes is all it takes!!

A couple of things to remember…

  • Plan to attend to the caramel sauce for the entire 10 minutes, any neglect could provide very undesirable results
  • You will want to have all of your ingredients ready to go, the process moves fast, and as mentioned above, you want to stay close by
  • The best utensil for this process is a rubber spatula, just make sure you are using one that can stand up to the constant heat

Once you have perfected this recipe, you can use it on your ice cream, or as a dip for apples….it is actually the featured ingredient in my next two recipes!

(This post has a lot of step-by-step pictures to help you understand the process…)

Salted Caramel Sauce

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 6 T butter, cut up into 6 pieces
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 t salt

Make sure you have all of the ingredients ready and close to your stove

1) Add the sugar to a medium saucepan, heat using medium heat, stirring constantly with a rubber spatula that can endure the heat

2) The sugar will form clumps, and eventually turn into a smooth amber color

3) Carefully add the butter slices, the mixture will bubble. Stir until the butter melts.

4) Slowly stir in the heavy cream. This will cause the mixture to bubble even more, and might even splatter.

5) Allow the mixture to boil for 1 minute. Remove from heat and stir in the salt.
